Small Curvature Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-manifolds

چکیده
In a paper of Menasco and Reid, it is conjectured that there exist no hyperbolic knots in S3 for which the complement contains a closed embedded totally geodesic surface. In this note, we show that one can get ”as close as possible” to a counter-example. Specifically, we construct a sequence of hyperbolic knots {Kn} with complements containing closed embedded essential surfaces having principal curvatures converging to zero as n tends to infinity. We also construct a family of two-component links for which the complements contain closed embedded totally geodesic surfaces of arbitrarily large genera. In addition, we prove that a closed embedded surface with sufficiently small principal curvatures is not only quasi-Fuchsian (a result of W. Thurston’s), but it is also either acylindrical or or the boundary of a twisted I-bundle.

Curvature Bounds for Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-manifolds
We prove existence of thick geodesic triangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and use this to prove existence of universal bounds on the principal curvatures of surfaces embedded in hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

In these notes, we study the existence and topology of closed minimal surfaces in 3-manifolds with geometric structures. In some cases, it is convenient to consider wider classes of metrics, as similar results hold for such classes. Also we briefly diverge to consider embedded minimal 3-manifolds in 4-manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, extending an argument of Lawson to this case. In the ...

In this paper, we show that an $L_1$-2-type surface in the three-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^3subset R^4_1$ either is an open piece of a standard Riemannian product $ H^1(-sqrt{1+r^2})times S^{1}(r)$, or it has non constant mean curvature, non constant Gaussian curvature, and non constant principal curvatures.
متن کاملMinimal Surfaces in Finite Volume Hyperbolic 3-manifolds N and in M × S, M a Finite Area Hyperbolic Surface
We consider properly immersed finite topology minimal surfaces Σ in complete finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds N , and in M × S, where M is a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove Σ has finite total curvature equal to 2π times the Euler characteristic χ(Σ) of Σ, and we describe the geometry of the ends of Σ. .

1. A conjectural picture of 3-manifolds. A major thrust of mathematics in the late 19th century, in which Poincaré had a large role, was the uniformization theory for Riemann surfaces: that every conformai structure on a closed oriented surface is represented by a Riemannian metric of constant curvature. For the typical case of negative Euler characteristic (genus greater than 1) such a metric ...
